SALISBURY, Md. - 30-year-old Ryan Stevenson was born and raised on the Eastern Shore. He was an EMT, volunteer fire fighter, assisted with hurricane Katrina relieve, and started Wicomico First Alert, a popular Facebook page that notifies the community about incidents around the county. Ryan’s brother, Paul Dunford says, “He's like impacted so many different places in the community. It's influenced me to be the person I am today.” Terrie Stevenson, Ryan’s mother says, “He just always wanted to help the community. He wanted to help wherever it was needed, he wanted to go." However, now Ryan needs help. On July 18th as Ryan was driving home from work, a drunk driver reportedly slammed into the back of his truck on Route 50, causing it to flip over multiple times. Terrie goes on, “It severed his spinal cord, c-6 and 7. He's now quadriplegic.” Ryan has no feeling below his neck. He's being treated at shock trauma in Baltimore. His family has been going back and forth ever since the crash; his sister has even picked up an interest in nursing. Lillie Dunford, Ryan’s sister says, “I'm taking classes at Parkside so I can help him.” However, his family could still use more support. They're asking anyone if they can to help them raise money to make Ryan's mother's home handicap accessible. Terrie continues, “We want to pull the carpets up so that we can lay some laminate flooring for him to have easier access with a wheelchair. We're trying to take down a partial wall for room. We just want to make it nice for Ryan.” Ryan’s family says has been through enough and never deserved this tragedy. Nicole Cunha, Ryan’s older sister says, “Don't take anything for granted, nothing. You don't think that it's going to happen to your family and it can. You have to cherish every second.” If you would like to support Ryan his family has set up an account at the Farmer's Bank of Willards in the name "For the benefit of Ryan Stevenson." There is also a Facebook page set up under the name "Hope for Ryan" with more donation information.
