Underground Fuel Tanks Spill into Service Vault - Shore Stop - Garfield Parkway

Friday, August 3, 2007

Shortly before 8 PM, the Bethany Beach Vol. Fire Co was alerted for a washdown at the Shore Stop along Garfield Parkway. Employees reported fuel coming up out of the ground around the underground service vault where the fuel tanks are stored. The crew from Quint 70 investigated the report and found the vault full of gasoline. The manager of the store estimated that the vault could hold at least 250 gallons of fuel. Additional manpower was called into the scene and crews went to work isolating the area around the vault as well as using absorbent booms and stay dry to dam off the areas around the storm drains and also isolating the fuel in place until DNREC could arrive and dispose of the fuel. Millsboro VFC's Haz Mat Team was also requested to assist with the isolation of the fuel. Units remained on scene for over 4 hours until the fuel was disposed of. Thanks to the Roxana VFC, Millville VFC and Millsboro VFC for their assistance.
