Martin Named Firefighter of the Year - Carousel Hotel, Ocean City

Saturday, November 17, 2007

At its annual award dinner held on November 17, the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company honored Deputy Chief Brian Marin as its 2007 Firefighter of the Year.  Martin also received his ten-year service award.

The Firefighter of the Year Award is named after Past Chief Willis Matthews, a legendary figure at the BBVFC who was fire chief for 8 years between 1969 and 1992, and recognizes the member that has distinguished himself or herself through exemplary performance as both a firefighter and a member.  Martin’s accomplishments in both areas are prodigious.  As deputy chief for the last two years, he assists the fire chief with and advises him on day-to-day operations and has responsibility for the very important duty crew and live-in programs.  As a firefighter, he can always be found in the middle of the action when he does not have command responsibilities.  Lastly, as a member, including past service as assistant treasurer, he was part of the committee that oversaw design and construction of the Company’s new headquarters.

Chief Tom Moore said, “Brian is a foundation stone of this organization and a role model for every firefighter, especially our younger members and juniors.  His value to the BBVFC is incalculable.”

Martin, 31, was born in Philadelphia, attended North Penn High School and Penn State University and was a volunteer firefighter for 4 years in the Philadelphia area.  His family moved to Sussex County in 1996 and he joined the BBVFC in 1997.  Martin is a nationally certified firefighter I&II and the Company’s most experienced seaman.  He also recently passed the US Coast Guard captain’s exam.  He lives in Ocean View with his wife, Jesika, and their two children and operates Martin Services LLC, a property management and home improvement firm, with his father, Jack, who is also a BBVFC member.

Martin said, “I am humbled by this award.  To be so recognized by my fellow members is the greatest possible honor.”
