On February 20th, 2015 John Huegel received the Josh M. Freeman Valor Award as the EMT of the Year for The Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company. Here are some of John's tremendous accomplishments.
After John retired from running his own business, John joined the fire company in November of 2009 as an EMS Member. John wasted no time in obtaining his Emergency Medical Technician Training and becoming a Nationally Registered and Delaware EMT.
Since then John has been our top volunteer EMS responder. Over his tenure at Bethany Beach, John has responded to over 958 incidents. These incidents include primary and secondary EMS responses, backfilling the ambulance so that our firefighters can staff the fire apparatus, and various other emergency responses.
John takes his EMS training and preparation very seriously. John has completed 381 hours of EMS and rescue training. John is a regular attendee at our fire company training sessions. John has sought out additional EMS training opportunities such as attending the Journal of Emergency Medical Services Conference held in Baltimore Maryland.
In addition to his emergency response activities, John has been very active on the administrative side of the fire company. John routinely helps with EMS special events, T-shirts sales on the boardwalk, and Sunday morning breakfast the fire house logging over 700 hours of non-emergency service. John also has held the office of Assistant Secretary and assisted on numerous committees. John has a constant record of providing on-call and stand by services to the fire company. Furthermore, over his five plus years with the fire company he has provided over 4,774 hours of service.
So much for John’s retirement, we have been truly blessed to have such a dedicated individual such as John Huegel join the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company.
